I was surprised by the number of cosplayers at Special Edition: NYC. There just didn’t seem to be that many compared to New York Comic Con. I wonder if it’s that people felt limited in what they could cosplay as at a convention that billed itself as geared specifically to comic books, and not one as all-encompassing as NYCC. That said, those who did cosplay at SE:NYC really brought it!

This Silent Bob is a staple of the NY cosplay scene. I feel like I see him at every convention.

Prefontaine – Review

prefontaine movie poster

A recent trip to Eugene, Oregon inspired my watching of the biopic Prefontaine. In case you’re not familiar with Eugene, it’s an interesting town. Almost everyone there seems to be either a hardcore runner or a meth head. I’d say the population is 40% runners, 40% meth heads, and 20% people finding their own thing. I’m focused on the runners today. Eugene’s nickname is Track Town, USA (much better choice than Methtropolis, USA). It’s home of the University of Oregon’s Ducks track team and is the birthplace of sneaker company Nike.

Despite his short time on this  Earth, Steve Prefontaine is one of the most famous American runners in history. He’s an Olympian who went to the University of Oregon, and spent his adult life living in Oregon. On my trip to Euguene, I went running on the Prefontaine Memorial Running Trail in Alton Baker Park. This trail might be my favorite trail on which I’ve ever run. The trail itself is gorgeous. You pass by Autzen Stadium, the home of the Ducks, as well as a tranquil stream lined with what must be the nicest houses in Euguene, and shaded woods. The trail is super soft; I’m guessing there are ground up Nikes mixed in with the wood chips. If you ever find yourself Eugene, make sure you go for a run on this trail.

pre trail running

It was running on Pre’s Trail that made me want to learn more about his life. Before this, I pretty much only knew that he ran fast and died young. Prefontaine does a good job of telling Pre’s life story. The movie is not a documentary, but every now and again it cuts away to Steve’s friends and family in the present day talking about Steve back then. I was completely fooled into thinking that these were Steve’s actual mother, college girlfriend, etc and thought, wow, they did a great job with making the actors look like young versions of these people! That is, until Bill Dellinger, one of Steve’s college coaches, shows up in the present day, looking just like Ed O’Neill, who played Bill in the movie. You almost had me, makers of Prefontaine! The make-up artists really did a great job of aging the actors to become the older versions of the roles, though now that we’re 17 years removed from the making of this movie, it’s fun to compare the present day/older Bill Dellinger in the movie to the actual older Ed O’Neill today.

pre leto

Jared Leto stars as Steve Prefontaine and gives a great performance. He really shows Pre’s drive to be the best. I shouldn’t be surprised by the performance, as Leto’s always been great since My So Called Life. R. Lee Ermey plays Nike cofounder Bill Bowerman for laughs, but what else would you expect from him?

pre and bowerman movie

Halfway through the movie, I thought to myself, is that Chazz’s girlfriend from Airheads? Sure enough, it was. Amy Locane plays runner and Steve’s college girlfriend Nancy Alleman (I love Airheads).

amy locane airheads

One my favorite lines in the movie comes after Pre’s lackluster 4th place finish in Munich, when he jokes, “They’ll name a street for me, 4th Street.” According to IMDB, this was actually said by one of Steve’s teammates, and not Steve himself, but it’s a great line nevertheless.

pre track

My only quibbles with the movie is that it seemed to go out of its way to gloss over the contribution of alcohol in Steve’s death and Pre’s contribution to the founding of Nike. Steve was a heavy drinker and reportedly had been drinking the night of his fatal car crash, but the only alcohol seen in the movie seemed to be the beers Steve served working as a bartender or people drinking in the background at parties. As for Nike, the film makes Pre seem like Bowerman’s favorite guinea pig for testing out his sneaker designs, but never shows Pre actually working for the sneaker company, which he did. His only interaction with a pair of actual Nikes in the movie is when he rips off the swoosh logo, saying that it will only cause drag.

Overall, Prefontaine is good biopic and worth searching for on Netflix. Wear your shorts when you watch it, as you’ll likely be inspired to get up and run when the movie finishes.

Brooklyn Defender Launch Party!

Photos by Graig Kreindler. Written by David Henehan.

Last night, New York Comic Con had their Brooklyn Defender Launch Party at Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg. For the past three years, Brooklyn Brewery has produced a limited edition beer in honor of New York Comic Con, the Brooklyn Defender.

The recipe of the beer changes each year. Every year so far it’s been a different variation on an IPA, but Brooklyn Brewery founder and brewmaster Garrett Oliver said during his speech last night that it’s not guaranteed to always be an IPA.

Besides the recipe changing every year, so does the design of the Brook Defender’s superhero persona the artist who designs it. The first Brooklyn Defender was designed by Tony Millionaire. Last year’s was designed by current Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang. This year’s Brooklyn Defender was designed by Rocketgirl’s Amy Reeder.

Amy Reeder was at the event last night. She gave out free copies of Rocket Girl #1 and signed them as well. Besides the comic, everyone in attendance received a Brooklyn Defender pint glass, sticker and t-shirt, all designed by Reeder. And the NYCC crew raffled off a bunch of NYCC passes.

Oh, and did I mention that the event was totally free to get into and was open bar all night! That’s right, free Brooklyn Brewery beer all night, and not just the Defender. Anything on tap was yours for the asking, including the delicious and deadly Brooklyn Blast!

The one thing that did surprise me about last night’s event was the lack of cosplayers. There was one very awesome Rocketeer, and that was it. I was shocked.

If you missed out on Brookyn Defender Launch Party in the past three years, make sure you attend next year! Last night was a lot of fun, especially considering that no one dressed as Batman puked on anyone (It’s happened there before…)

Tuesday Night Comics Podcast Episode 36

Hey everyone, Billy here. I apologize PROFUSELY for the lateness of this episode. We had a technical issue with downloading the audio file, and weren’t able to edit it until today. But I do hope that you enjoy this episode!

Batman: Assault on Arkham – Review

batman assault on arkham dvd cover

I’ve touted the team of screenwriter Heath Corson and director Jay Oliva before in my review of Justice League: War, and they live up to that high praise with the newly released Batman: Assault on Arkham.  This movie, the latest in DC’s direct-to-video releases, takes place in the same continuity as the Batman: Arkham line of video games. The characters are modeled after the designs in those games, and like in the games, Batman is voiced by perennial Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy. Sadly, Mark Hamill does not voice The Joker.

Batman-Kevin-Conroy-in-Assault-on-Arkham

What might be the best thing about Batman: Assault on Arkham is that this is almost a Suicide Squad movie in disguise. I say almost, because there is still plenty of the title character in Batman: Assault on Arkham. But the Squad is given as much screen time, if not more, than the Dark Knight. Batman: Assault on Arkham is the Suicide Squad movie we’ve always wanted.

suicide squad

Corson captured the voices of the individual squad members perfectly. Captain Boomerang and Deadshot barely get along. Harley is psychotic, flirtatious and hilarious all at the same time. And I love that the Amanda Waller we’re presented with is the pre-New 52 Amanda Waller. This Amanda Waller won’t be confused with Vixen anytime soon (unlike her New 52 counterpart). She’s large and she’s in charge.

amanda waller assault on arkham

Because it’s set outside the regular continuity of DC’s animated movies, Corson and Oliva are given free reign to really play around with the characters. Also, the Suicide Squad definitely lives up to its name, as not all of its members live long enough to appear in a potential sequel. Sure, you know that Batman, Deadshot, Harley and The Joker can’t die, simply based on when this happens in Arkham continuity, but everyone else in fair game.

killer frost assault on arkham

Like many other DC Animated movies, the extras are just as good as the movie itself. We get a nice piece on Harley’s history, a preview for Throne of Atlantis that was so good that it has me ready to pronounce that as the next BEST DC animated movie, and some episodes from previous Batman cartoon series.

harley quinn assault on arkham

Batman: Assault on Arkham is not a movie I would recommend picking up for the tiny Batfan in your life. It is definitely not small child appropriate. The video games are all rated Teen, and I would consider that an appropriate rating for this movie as well. If you’re not comfortable with your child witnessing the violence and sexual humor in the games, you probably wouldn’t be with this film either. Stick to Batman: The Brave and the Bold for the Bat-tykes.

For the teen to adult fan though, Batman: Assault on Arkham should not be missed!
