Agents of SHIELD S1E11 – The Magical Place – Recap

tahiti

The wait is over. Agents of SHIELD is back! SPOILERS ahead, so if you haven’t watched The Magical Place yet, you may want to do that before you continue. It’s cool, we’ll hold a chair for you.

This episode could have been called Answers, because that’s what we get. Coulson DID die in The Avengers.  From what we learn in this new episode, this Phil Coulson is not a LMD, but rather is the same Coulson brought back from the dead. How did they bring him back? It involved at least seven surgeries, and a crazy brain scanning/operating machine that looked like it was borrowed from The Matrix. I winced when that machine has its pincers in Coulson’s exposed brain. Exposed brain makes me wince too, by the way. And there is no Tahiti, at least not for Coulson. Tahiti was a mirage/hologram/implanted memory.

Cut away! No, not cut away his brain! Cut away from this shot!

I was glad to see Firefly alum Ron Glass, aka Shepherd Book, aka Dr. Streiten, return. We haven’t seen Dr. Streiten since the pilot episode. When Streiten is confronted by Coulson, he fesses up immediately, and it very sorry that they brought Coulson back. On the operating table, Coulson kept saying “Let me die” and that he was in a lot of pain. Not wanting a whiny post-death Coulson on their hands, SHIELD messed with his brain to keep his pre-death personality intact. Looking at the preview for next week’s episode, it’s safe to say Coulson is not okay with having his brain mucked with. Expect to see the very “company man” Coulson travelling down the path mostly traveled by Skye.  If they messed with his brain to make him more like his old self, what else did they do while they were in there?

Skye shines this episode from the moment she’s booted from the plane by May. We all knew why May booted her right from the start, right? It amazed me that it took the rest of the team so long to catch on. If I was Victoria Hand, after hearing the way May answered whether or not Skye should stay, I think I would have confined Skye to her quarters.

On her own, Skye unleashes her inner May, even going so far as to call herself Agent May when interrogating Rob Huebel. I was so happy that Rob Huebel was cast for this episode. I’ve loved the man since his Inconsiderate Cell Phone Man commercials, which are easily the best silence your phone spots ever! Human Giant? Awesome. His Twitter feed? Hilarious. Hollywood casting agents: More Rob Huebel!

There were some deaths and a resurrection (besides Coulson’s) to round out The Magical Place. Mike Peterson is killed off-screen at the beginning of the episode, only to shown alive (but missing a few body parts) at the very end of the episode. Po, the creepy dude freed from prison by Centipede, is killed through his phone when The Clairvoyant decides it’s time to promote Raina. We all agree Raina is the creepiest, right? Yes, she’s one of the bad guys, but she seems pretty cool until she gets all crazy-eyed when she talks about The Clairvoyant. I really liked that Coulson got an answer to the question everyone wanted to ask, but was afraid to, namely what’s with all the flower dresses?

Next week’s episode is called Seeds. I’m guessing it’s about Ward’s secret gardening habit or a wild sex party on the bus. We’ll find out if I’m right on Tuesday!

Saturday at NYCC 2012 Planning Guide

Saturday is the most popular day at New York Comic Con. You will find yourself in the middle of some slow moving crowds. But you will be rewarded with the best programming of the weekend.

8:00 AM Robot Chicken Autographing Ticket Giveaway
8:00 AM AMC’s The Walking Dead Autographing Ticket Giveaway
NYCC doesn’t start until 10 AM on Saturday, but if you want to get in on either of these autographing sessions, plan for an early morning. The lines for these officially start forming at 7:00 AM, but I wouldn’t be surprised if people show up even earlier. Assuming you can only get tickets to one, do you line up for Robot Chicken or The Walking Dead? And what do you do between 8:01 AM and 9:59 AM?

10:00 AM – 7:00 PM Celebrity Autographing and Photo-Ops
Miss getting your picture taken or your DVD signed by your favorite Hobbit/evil wizard/brother-kissing Rebel leader on Friday? You’re in luck! They’ll happily take your money today too!

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM The Image Comics Experience
Come here and hear announcements for what may be the best new series coming to your LCS in the months to come!

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Kill Shakespeare: The Live Stage Reading
Are you fan of this IDW series? Then maybe you’d like to see the story performed by live actors. The costumes are almost guaranteed to be better than the Green Goblin’s from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2
See exclusive footage of the second half of the animated Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Movie. DC Animation Legend Bruce Timm will be on hand for this one.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM Mattypalooza
If you’ve got one (or more!) of mattycollector.com’s subscriptions, I’m guessing you are really going to want to be here to find out what is coming down the pipe for Masters of the Universe, DC Universe, Watchmen and Ghostbusters.

12:15 PM – 1:15 PM The Big Quiz Thing
Do you always get the comic book question right whenever there’s one at your local pub quiz? In that case, you might want to show up for this and clean house!

1:30 PM – 2:30 PM DC Comics – The New 52
I wonder if they’ll be making a New 52 Wave 4 announcement. I also wonder at what point we’ll stop calling it the “New” 52. It’s been over a year now!

2:45 PM – 3:45 PM Marvel NOW!: The Avengers
It’s hard to remember when Brian Michael Bendis wasn’t writing The Avengers. Now that he’s decided to move on to other projects, Marvel is putting two of their biggest writers on The Avengers: Rick Remender and Jonathan Hickman, who will both be on hand for this panel.

3:00 PM – 3:45 PM From Fight Club to Hell and Back
Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club, will discuss his latest novel, The Damned, which has the tag line “Welcome to the Inferno by way of The Breakfast Club. I am intrigued.

4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Vertigo – Fables: 10th Anniversary!
Fables is 10 years old? Wow. Time flies when you’re one of the best comic book series on the stands every month. You read Fables, right? The collections are all in print. Start now and get a head start on 2022’s 20th anniversary.

5:00 PM – 6:00 PM AMC’s “The Walking Dead” Panel Event
Practically the entire cast of The Walking Dead are being interviewed by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick. I’m not sure how you could make this more enticing. This is must-see for me.

5:15 PM – 6:15 PM DC Comics: Justice League
When the New 52 was announced, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee’s Justice League was my most anticipated series. Unfortunately  it hasn’t lived up to the admittedly very lofty expectations I had for it, but with Lee leaving and longtime Johns collaborator Ivan Reis coming on for art duties, maybe we’ll see a turnaround in the New 52’s flagship title? I’m interested to hear what will be coming up for Justice League in 2013.

6:15 PM – 7:15 PM Firefly 10th Anniversary Special Event – First Look
On 11/11/12, the Science Channel will be airing a Firefly 10th Anniversary Special Event. They will be showing an exclusive preview of it at NYCC. There will also be “special surprise guests” at this panel. Maybe an appearance by Nathan Fillion? That would be awesome.

6:45 PM – 7:45 PM Saga: Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll
Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples are going to take about their new series Saga. Why does this have to overlap with the Firefly panel?!?

7:45 PM – 8:45 PM Bleeding Cool Panel With Rich Johnston
Are you constantly hitting f5 on comics news and rumors sites? Then you will definitely want to be here, as Rich Johnston is promising to break some secrets about 2013’s major events that no one has reported before.

8:00 PM – 10:00 PM NYCC Charity Art Auction
The art that’s already up on the New York Comic Con website for this auction looks amazing. I can’t wait to see everything that makes its way into this event. The money raised goes to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, so don’t feel bad about bidding high.

On The Couch #23: Brothers

WARNING: This post not only spoils plot points in Brothers, it also exposes both your eyes to a little explicit language and your ears to a little explicit language combined with some very off-key singing.

I recently got into Joss Whedon’s short-lived but excellent TV show Firefly. I know, I’m late to the party on this one. My favorite part of the show has to be the theme song. Anytime I watch an episode, I end up with the theme song stuck in my head for days.

It was stuck in my head while watching Brothers and I found myself singing about the movie to the tune of the Firefly theme. I realized the best way to express my thoughts on Brothers here on the blog would be through song and got to work on some more Brothers by way of Firefly song parody lyrics.

Please enjoy.

“I know you fucked her” is my new favorite line to whisper to people.
For those of you who don’t want to keep exposing your ears to my at home karaoke, or really want to sing along with me, here are the song lyrics:
“Brothers by way of Firefly”

Words by Tuesday Night Movies
Music by Joss Whedon

Take my fam, take my life
My brother Tom fucked my wife
That’s what Bella told me
Gyllenhall is too sexy

Take my love, Take my fam
I’m stuck in Afghanistan
It’s okay, thought I was dead
So you fucked her in my bed

Trashed the kitchen ‘n TV
Better call the cops on me
‘Cause Tobey’s gone a bit crazy

At The Theater #17: Paper Man

While I didn’t see Paper Man at the Tribeca Film Festival, it is a Tribeca Film Festival film that I saw while the festival was running. We made it back to Brooklyn from our free Snow Men screening with time to spare to catch the 9:30 Saturday night screening of Paper Man at Brooklyn Heights Cinemas. Woo-hoo! Double feature!

I probably would have liked Paper Man less if I hadn’t seen Greenberg. While watching Paper Man, I couldn’t help but think “This is what Greenberg would be like if that movie wasn’t so annoying.” Similar to Greenberg, Paper Man is about a man with mental issues and without social skills who finds himself trying to get by in a new environment. Greenberg has an awkward relationship a personal assistant played by Greta Gerwig. Paper Man’s Richard Dunn, played by Jeff Daniels, has an awkward friendship with a local high school student played by Emma Stone. Greenberg vents his frustrations to his English best friend who didn’t talk much. Dunn vents all his frustrations to his imaginary best friend named Captain Excellent, a superhero played by Ryan Reynolds. In every one of these match-ups, Paper Man wins. But then again, being better than Greenberg isn’t that much of a compliment.

I wasn’t excited about Ryan Reynolds being cast as Green Lantern Hal Jordon in the upcoming Green Lantern movie. Out of all the stars of Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, I thought Nathan Fillion would have been the much better choice as Hal Jordan. Besides looking like Hal Jordan, Fillion proved he can do outerspace action in Sci-Fi’s short-lived Firefly. After seeing Ryan Reynolds here, I’m more excited than I was before about Reynolds as Green Lantern. The guy can carry himself like a superhero. Though the costume designer in Paper Man seems to have borrowed so much from Miracleman for Captain Excellent that I kept expecting him to yell out “Kimota!”

Never let your imaginary friend drive, even if he is a Super Friend.
The best part of Paper Man is Emma Stone explaining how easy it is to make soup. She explains that soup is the easiest thing to make, because you just take all the things you have lying around that aren’t maybe in tip-top shape anymore and instead of throwing them in the garbage, cook them in some chicken broth and you’ve got soup. Hmm, that sounds less appetizing than how she described it.
I’m really glad I didn’t pay $16.50 + $3.50 to see this movie. There’s an important lesson to be learned from this weekend. Very few movies are probably worth what Tribeca Film Festival charges for tickets. You’re better off waiting until they make it to your theater or to Netflix. That said, in a little less than a year I’ll once again be anticipating the Tribeca Film Festival and the Tribeca Family Festival coming to town.
